UIU in 2nd Place after First Half of NSIC Championship

The Upper Iowa Women’s Golf Team traveled to Becker, Minnesota to compete in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championship at Pebble Creek Golf Course. The team stands in 2nd place after the first 36-holes of the 72-hole tournament. The NSIC Championship is split over a weekend in the fall and a weekend in the spring.

The Peacocks shot a 336 on day one and found themselves in second place, 8 strokes behind Southwest State. UIU improved 13 strokes on day two and finished with a 323, but Winona State shot a 315 and edged the Peacocks for the lead halfway through the championship. Upper Iowa completed the first half of the championship with a total of 659; they trail Winona State (657) by 2 strokes. Southwest State is currently in third with a score of 669.

Rachael Schmidt led the Peacocks with a two-day total of 158 (82-76), which places her in 4th place. Rochelle Schmidt, the low Peacock on day one, is tied for 5th place with a 159 (81-78). Laura Taylor fired a 164 (85-79) which places her in 8th, while Angie Johnson shot a 178 (88-90) and Lindsey Holien shot a 181 (90-91), which currently placed them in ties for 17th and 21st place, respectively.

Following the weekend, Coach Chad Markuson said, “The women played great this weekend. Rachael, Rochelle, and Laura played excellent golf on Sunday. For all three to finish in the 70’s says a lot about their focus and execution. I was also proud of Angie and Lindsey for turning good efforts and giving the team the opportunity to be in contention. One of our goals at the beginning of the year was to be in third place or better after the first half of the Northern Sun Championship. We have put ourselves in a great position to finish the championship this spring.”

Upper Iowa will tee it up for the final time this fall on Saturday and Sunday, October 14th and 15th, in Nisswa, Minnesota at Deacon’s Lodge in a tournament co-hosted by Upper Iowa and Concordia.
