Rachael Schmidt Named Independent Freshman of the Year




Rachael Schmidt capped her impressive freshman season by being named the All-Independents Collegiate Athletic Association (ICAA) Women's Golf Freshman of the Year today. Rachael was also named to the All-ICAA First Team while her sister Rochelle was named to the Second Team. The twins were each named to the All-ICAA Freshman Team.
 
Rachael, an honorable mention All-American, finished tied for 10th at the NCAA Division II Championships in May. She qualified for nationals after placing third at the North Regional. Rachael won four tournaments this year and had 10 top-5 finishes. She had an 80.44 scoring average and was named to the five-member All-North Region Team.
 
Rochelle narrowly missed qualifying for nationals after placing fifth in the region. She won the Best Western Riverport Warmup in September. Rochelle had nine top-5 finishes this year, and recorded an 81.62 scoring average. Rochelle joined her sister on the All-North Region Team.
 
All-ICAA selections were based on stroke averages with players having to play in at least 60 percent of all rounds played. The Division II Independents are Cal State Monterey Bay, Chico State, Grand Canyon, Notre Dame DeNamur, St. Martins, Tiffin, Truman State and Upper Iowa.
