Schmidt Repeats 79 on Day Two of Women’s Golf National Championships

Rachael Schmidt (SO, Elk River, Minn.) shot a 79 (+7) on day two of the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf National Championships. The tournament is being hosted by the University of West Florida at the Stonebrook Golf Club in Pace, Florida. Schmidt teed off in the final group today with fellow individuals.

Schmidt opened the day’s action with a par on one, but quickly fell into trouble with a double bogey on two and bogeys on three and four. She regrouped well on the par three, fifth hole as she collected her first birdie of the day. The momentum wouldn’t swing completely in Schmidt’s favor as she bogeyed seven and doubled eight. Schmidt made the turn at +6 and had to settle in to remain in the hunt with only 45 holes left in the tournament. She began the back nine with a birdie on a par five, but gave the stroke back on eleven. Schmidt finished the last seven holes strongly and headed to the clubhouse having repeated her first round score of 79 (+7). The sophomore recorded a par on six of the final seven holes.

Schmidt currently sits in a tie for 26th place with a two day total of 158 (79-79). She will tee off in the first group at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.

The National Championship is a four round event that will crown both a team champion and ten All-Americans. Schmidt finished 10th at last year’s championship to earn All-American honors and will look to repeat that honor.
