North Dakota Wins NCAA DII North Regional; UIU’s Schmidt Medalist




Waterloo, Iowa – The third and final round of the 2007 NCAA Division II Women’s Golf North Regional took place today at the Sunnyside Country Club in Waterloo, Iowa.
 
The temperature was 55 as the first group teed off at 8:30 under a cloudless sky. Temperatures warmed throughout play and reached 66 by the end of round as the sky became partly cloudy. Winds were out of the east and northeast and varied between 12 to 15 mph.
 
North Dakota fired a 324 (971, +107) on day three to win the North Regional by 21 strokes. Truman State claimed second place, but needed a sudden death playoff hole with Nebraska-Omaha to earn the bid to Nationals. Truman State shot 339 on the day, while Nebraska-Omaha shot 318 to climb back from fifth place into a tie at the end of 54 holes. Both teams stood at 992 (+128). On the sudden death playoff hole, Truman State totaled a 20, while Nebraska-Omaha totaled a 21.
 
Upper Iowa maintained its hold on fourth and finished with a 332 (998, +134) on day three; just six strokes back of second place. Augustana came into the regional as the #1 team, but struggled on day three shooting a 342 (1004, +140) to finish fifth overall. Winona State remained in sixth place as they shot 334 (1010, +146).
 
Upper Iowa’s Rachael Schmidt shot a 78 on the final day of the tournament to wrap up medalist honors for the tournament. Schmidt finished ten strokes over par (226) and won by five strokes. Julie Williams of Truman State finished in second place with an 80 (231, +15), while Kelly Godwin earned the second individual bid to Nationals with a 78 (236, +20) as she finished third in the tournament. Godwin played as an individual from Concordia University-St. Paul.
 
Rounding out the top ten were: Kristi Lucken, North Dakota, 238 (+22); Amanda Young (Individual), South Dakota, 239 (+23); Alexia Gagnon LaPlante, North Dakota, 239 (+23); Krystal Limisiaco, Truman State, 241 (+25); Erin Oakland (Individual), Southwest Minnesota State, 244 (+28); Sarah Lucken, North Dakota, 245 (+29); and Carley Roach, Augustana, 245 (+29).
 
The University of North Dakota and Truman State University have earned team spots and Rachael Schmidt of Upper Iowa University and Kelly Godwin of Concordia University-St. Paul have earned individual spots at the NCAA Division II National Tournament at Stonebrook Golf Club in Pensacola, Florida from May 9-12.
