The Upper Iowa women’s golf team traveled to St. Josephs, Missouri for their spring season opener. Missouri Western University hosted the tournament that took place at two different courses. The first day’s competition took place at Fairview Golf Course, while the second day’s play was Moila Country Club. The Peacocks finished in second place behind Nebraska-Omaha. Upper Iowa was led by the strong play of the tournament’s medalist, Rachael Schmidt, as well as good play from Rochelle Schmidt and Laura Taylor.
The Peacocks shot a 351 on day one and found themselves in third place, 12 strokes behind the leader, Nebraska-Omaha. After day one, Rachael Schmidt was in a tie atop the leader board with an 81, while Rochelle Schmidt was in 4th after firing an 84. UIU improved 10 strokes on day two and finished with a 341, but Nebraska-Omaha shot a 325 to pull away and win the tournament by 28 strokes. The Peacocks were able to overtake Concordia-St. Paul on day two to finish second by 10 strokes. Upper Iowa completed the tournament with a total of 692. Rachael Schmidt earned medalist honors for the tournament as she led the Peacocks with a two-day total of 162 (81-81). Rochelle Schmidt finished in 8th place with a 170 (84-86). Laura Taylor finished in 13th after firing an 84 on day two for a 175 (91-84). Taylor took 82 strokes on the day, but was penalized two strokes when a fellow golfer could not get the flagstick out of the hole as she tended a birdie putt from Taylor. The ball hit the stick as it fell into the hole and Taylor, by rule, was assessed a two-stroke penalty. Angie Johnson found herself in 20th place as she shot a 187 (95-92). Lindsey Holien rounded out the Peacocks five with a 191 (101-90). Glenna Meyer played as an individual and shot a 189 (93-96), while Jessica Lang only shot on the second day and recorded a 97 as an individual. Following the weekend, Coach Chad Markuson said, “I am happy with the overall effort of the team this weekend. Finishing second will go a long way toward the first set of regional rankings. It will be important for us to have a good week of practice, especially on the greens. I am also very happy with the medalist honor for Rachael. She defeated some very good golfers at this tourney. Laura played well the second day to give us a third score and Rochelle was very consistent.” Upper Iowa will tee it up again this weekend, March 30-April 2, as they will join with the men’s team in two tournaments. On Friday and Saturday, the Peacocks will play in a tourney hosted by Augustana College in South Dakota. Then on Sunday and Monday, the teams will play in a tourney hosted by the University of South Dakota. |
