Peacocks Lose to Marauders in Close NSIC Battle




The UIU Women’s Basketball team traveled to Bismarck, North Dakota for an afternoon NSIC match up on Saturday. The Peacocks took the court against the Marauders of the University of Mary. The two teams battled evenly the entire game, but the home team outscored the visitors 14-8 over the final three minutes to steal the victory, 82-76. After the tough loss, the Peacock’s record falls to 7-12 overall and 3-7 in the NSIC.

The Marauders jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but a pair of three-pointers by Peacock freshman Andrea Downs brought Upper Iowa back into the lead at the 16:58 mark. Mary used a 12-3 run over the next three minutes to take an eight point lead. Upper Iowa went on an 11-0 run of their own to take the lead 20-17 with 11:37 on the clock. The Peacock run was fueled by five points from Chelsea Petersen and three points a piece from Downs and Katie Reihmann. After a Marauder lay up gave the home team the lead by one, the visitors ran out to a 33-25 lead thanks to an 11-2 run that featured scores by Amanda Faas, Petersen and Downs. The Marauders battled back slowly over the final minutes of the half and the teams went to the locker rooms for the break with the Peacocks leading 39-37.
 
Upper Iowa and Mary spent the second half exchanging offensive blows. Neither team was able to pull away as the largest lead through the first 16 minutes of the half was three points; enjoyed by each team. After a jumper gave Mary a two point lead, 66-64, with 4:25 left to play, Faas made two free throws to tie the score. Mary scored on nine of their final ten possessions including seven of eight at the free throw line in the final 46 seconds to take the victory 82-76.
 
Downs scored a game-high 23 points on 9 of 13 shooting including 5 three-pointers. Faas added 14 points, while Petersen netted 13 and Hammel chipped in 10. Petersen led the rebounding effort with 7 boards; Faas and Paige DeVine each grabbed 5 boards. Sara Best dished out 4 assists, while Faas handed out 3. The team shot 51% for the game including 8 of 20 shooting from three, but only hit 2 of 10 three point attempts in the second half.
 
Nikki Landeck led the Marauders with 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists. Corrie Villegas tallied 18 points and 3 steals, while Kayla Rogers chipped in 12 points, 3 assists, and 2 rebounds. Mary shot 54% for the game including 8 of 17 shooting from three. The major difference for the Marauders was a free throw attempt advantage of 14 over the Peacocks. Mary was 20 of 26 at the line, while Upper Iowa was 10 of 12.

The Peacocks only have one game this coming weekend. The team will travel to Winona State University (Winona, MN) and attempt to avenge an overtime loss earlier in the season. The game is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 3, at 6:00 p.m.
