The UIU Women’s Basketball team was on the road for two Northern Sun games this weekend and came away with a split. The Peacocks defeated the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State on Friday night, 70-63, but were defeated in a hard fought battle on Saturday night against the Wildcats of Wayne State, 64-52. After the weekend, the women’s team has a record of 6-7 overall and 2-3 in the NSIC.
On Friday night, the Peacocks and Mustangs played evenly through the first five minutes, but Upper Iowa got on a run and rattled off nine unanswered points to take an 18-10 lead halfway through the first. Southwest did not let UIU run away and forced themselves back into the game over the next five minutes with a 10-4 run of their own. The Peacocks led 22-20 with five minutes to play in the half and held the Mustangs to only two points over the final minutes, while scoring fifteen points on the offensive end. Upper Iowa took a 37-22 lead into the locker room at the break. Over the first two minutes of the second half, the Peacocks extended their lead to 18 points on two occasions, but the visitors needed all of their big lead to hold off the home team. Southwest State battled back with runs during the second half cutting the lead to single digits on several possessions and got as close as six points two different times inside the final minute. The Peacocks were able to hold off the Mustangs and claim their second conference win of the season. Amanda Faas led the Peacocks with 25 points, while Andrea Downs netted 12 points, Katie Reihmann added 9 points, and Chelsea Petersen chipped in 8 points. Christa Hammel led the team in rebounding with 9, while Faas grabbed 6 and Paige DeVine and Jodi Best each nabbed 5. Downs dished out 7 assists, while Faas registered 3 steals. On Saturday night, the Peacocks took the court in Wayne, Nebraska. Upper Iowa started slowly and struggled through the first six minutes as they trailed the Wildcats 15-3. After a Peacock timeout, the team responded and over the next six minutes went on a 13-6 run to cut the deficit to five points with nine minutes to play in the half. Wayne State rattled off a quick 9-0 run to push the lead back to 14 points with six minutes to play thanks to a 0 for 5 Peacock shooting stretch. Upper Iowa finished the half well and cut the lead back into single digits. The Peacocks headed to the break trailing 34-25. The Wildcats started the second half strongly on a 12-5 run and extended their lead to 46-30. The Peacocks never recovered from this run and played evenly with the Wildcats for the remainder of the game. The Peacocks scored four unanswered points in the final minute to cut the final deficit to twelve points, 64-52. Faas and Reihmann led the Peacock scoring attack with 9 points each, while Petersen scored 8, and Downs, DeVine, and Hammel each netted 7. Petersen grabbed 11 boards, Faas added 8 boards, and Downs registered 6. Downs and Faas each dished out 3 assists, while Petersen and Faas each blocked 3 shots. The Peacocks will return to Dorman Gymnasium for two more Northern Sun Conference games this Friday night, the 12th of January, versus Minnesota State-Moorhead and Saturday night, the 13th of January, versus Concorida-St. Paul. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. |
