Wildcats Pull Away in Second Half to Defeat Peacocks

The Peacocks hosted the Wildcats of Wayne State College in their first Northern Sun Conference home game of the 2007-08 season. Upper Iowa entered the game searching for their first NSIC win of the year, while Wayne State entered with a 3-1 record in conference tilts. After a hard fought first half, the Wildcats pulled away in the second half for the victory, 79-58.

The two teams played an even first half, although the visitors were able to pull out to a slight lead at halftime, 40-32. Both teams shot the ball at a great pace in the opening half. Upper Iowa shot 54% (14-26), while Wayne State shot 57% (17-30); the difference came from behind the arc where the Wildcats hit 6, while the Peacocks only hit 2.

Wayne State pulled away in the second half outscoring the home team 39-26 over the second twenty minutes. Upper Iowa was unable to consistently take advantage of their size advantage inside and their shooting on the perimeter.

Christa Hammel led the Peacocks with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Andrea Downs recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists. Chelsea Petersen netted 12 points, but her minutes were limited by foul trouble. Sara Best was the final Peacock in double figures with 10 points while also handing out 4 assists.

Upper Iowa will be back on Prochaska Court tomorrow evening, Jan. 5, as they host the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University. The game will tip off at 6:00 p.m. and as always, several live options are available at UpperIowaAthletics.com if you can't make it to the game.
