The Upper Iowa University Wrestling Program has earned the #7 ranking in the latest NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches' Association's Top 20 Poll. The Peacocks received 111 points in taking the #7 spot. Upper Iowa also has seven individuals in the rankings. Junior Tyler Mumbulo remained steady at #5 in the 125 pound class. Junior Jacob Pedersen continued to climb to #4 at 133 pounds. Senior Tee Adams locked into the #3 spot at 149 pounds. Sophomore Travis Eggers is ranked #8 at 157 pounds, while fellow sophomore Mitch Norton held fast to the #5 ranking at 165 pounds. Senior Brady Hakeman moved up two spots to #5 at 174 pounds, while Senior Dan Goodson improved a notch to #3 at Heavyweight. Upper Iowa holds a 1-0 dual meet record with the victory coming over Truman State 34-9. The Peacocks have competed in six tournaments to this point in the season. UIU wrestlers have placed 41 times in 88 attempts including crowning eight tournament champions. The eight championships were won by Hakeman twice, Trevor Franklin twice (133,unattached), Mumbulo, Mitch Norton, Steven Baker (141), and Kyle Pedretti (125,unattached). Mumbulo became the first Peacock grappler to place (8th) at the Midlands Tournament since 1973. Upper Iowa has also gained recognition from the Northern Sun Conference for its early season success. Travis Eggers (11/15), Mitch Norton (11/20), and Tyler Mumbulo (12/3) have been named the NSIC Wrestler of the Week. Upper Iowa University will host the 2008 NCAA Division II National Championships at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 14 and 15, 2008. The Peacocks return to the mat this weekend at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa at the UNI-Dome. The #7 Peacocks will match up with #11 Greyhounds of Indianapolis in the first round of the National Duals. Upper Iowa will host U-Mary, Augustana, and #4 Minnesota State, Mankato over the next three Sundays in Dorman Gym beginning Jan. 20. All three matches will begin at 2 p.m. in Fayette. |
