BERKELEY, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team defeated Arizona State 7-5 Sunday morning in the ninth place game of the MPSF Tournament. Junior utility player Jennifer D'Anna led the Gauchos with three points scored in the match.
The Gauchos took an early lead against the Sun Devils scoring three points in the first quarter of play. ASU posted their first point in the second quarter and UCSB added one more as well bringing the Gaucho lead to 4-1 going into halftime.
Santa Barbara and Arizona each scored two points in the third cutting the Gaucho lead to three points. The Sun Devils finished the fourth quarter of play with two more points, but it wasn't enough to take the lead as UCSB captured the 7-5 win.
Senior Mica Bell scored two points in the game, while senior Katy Kunkel and sophomore Sarah Kovach each tallied a goal apiece. Goalie Christy Medigovich posted eight saves.
UC Santa Barbara finishes the tournament with an overall season record of 17-12 while Arizona's record drops to 11-21.
