BERKELEY, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team dropped their first match of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament to San Diego State 7-4. The Gauchos, who received the No. 7 seed into the tournament will get Friday off before playing No. 11 seed San Jose State Saturday morning.
The Aztecs took the early lead in the game with two goals scored in the first quarter of play. The Gauchos remained scoreless until sophomore ZiZi Clark put UCSB on the board in the second. Going into halftime the Aztecs remained ahead 4-1.
The Gauchos added two goals in the third, but allowed three Aztec goals. The final quarter UCSB was able to place one more in the Aztec cage, but the final score put San Diego on top 7-4.
The Gauchos will face San Jose State on Saturday. San Jose dropped their first game of the tournament to host team Cal 7-5. The Gauchos and Spartans have faced-off twice this season with UCSB winning both games by a single point. The first match-up was at the Gaucho Invitational where UCSB outscored SJSU 6-5. The second match-up of the season was March 26 in San Jose where the teams went into overtime periods before the Gauchos came away with the 10-9 victory.
The game versus San Jose State will be played Saturday, April 30 at 9:45 a.m. at Cal's Spieker Aquatic Complex in Berkeley.
