SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team suffered a tough 7-4 loss at home to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponent Arizona State. Alaina Whitaker scored twice for Santa Barbara, but it was not enough to overcome the Sun Devils.
Arizona State opened the scoring within the first minute of the game thanks to a goal by Katie Hedley, and got another at the 1:59 mark from Katie Davis. The Gauchos were unable to score until the second period when Alaina Whitaker finally got UCSB on the board. Unfortunately ASU scored two more to increase their lead to three at the half.
After scoring once more in the third quarter, ASU appeared to put the game out of reach. However Aimee Stachowski and Katie Kunkel both scored at the end of the period to put the Gauchos within two. The fourth quarter was seesaw battle with both squads exchanging goals to make it 4-6. Yet ASU scored once more to clinch the victory.
UCSB falls to 11-10 overall and 2-4 in the MPSF. ASU is now 9-12 overall and 2-6 in MPSF action.
Santa Barbara will face Stanford tomorrow at noon in UCSB Campus Pool.
