Irvine, Calif. -
Sophomore midfielder Krystal Sandza has been selected Big West Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the third time this season, the conference announced today.
Sandza led the Gauchos to wins in each of their first two Big West Conference matches. On Friday night, she scored the only goal of the match in a 1-0 overtime victory over Pacific. Sandza's goal against the Tigers came in the 101st minute and it was unassisted. In Sunday's 4-3 win over Cal State Northridge, she scored two goals and assisted on a third. Her second goal, scored in the 81st minute, snapped a 3-3 tie and proved to be the game-winner.
On the season, Sandza has now scored 19 goals, four assists and 42 points. Her goal totals and point totals both lead the Big West. In addition, her 19 goals in a single-season rank her tied for sixth on UCSB's all-time list and her 42 points ranks eighth. On October 6, Sandza broke UCSB's record for goals in a match when she scored five in a road game at Air Force. In addition to her five-goal performance, she has had two matches with three goals and two other matches with a pair of goals. Amazingly, Sandza had tallied just one assist in the first two matches, the rest of her 41 points have come in the last 11 contests.
With the wins over the weekend, the Gauchos are now 9-3-1 overall and 2-0-0 in Big West play.
