Sacramento, Calif. -
Fourth time proved to be a charm as UC Santa Barbara earned its first road win of the year, 3-2, at Sacramento State's expense. The match proved to be a tough battle that saw both teams holding leads and finally was capped off with a Santa Barbara comeback victory.
The Gauchos were first to strike as sophomore Jen Codington scored off a pass from junior Annika Wright at the 33:04 mark. It was a lead that lasted only 19 seconds as the Sacramento State Hornets came right back with a goal by midfielder Lisa Casey. The match went into halftime tied 1-1.
Going into the second half both teams picked up their aggressive play as each time fired eight shots a piece in the half. The Hornets scored at the 71:17 mark to grab their first lead of the match on a goal by midfielder Marisa Mercado. This lead lasted exactly four minutes as freshman midfielder Inez Oriol scored her second goal of the year at the 75:17 mark for Santa Barbara. With the match tied at 2-2, freshman Alex Richey, headed a cross from sophomore Erica Perrotta to give the Gauchos 3-2 lead at the 76:26 mark. This proved to be enough as the Gauchos held on to win their first road match of the year.
Freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Barr got her second start of the year and earned her second win in doing so. She had five saves off 13 shots and two goals against. Senior co-captain April Loveland sat out her third consecutive match due to a strained MCL. She is listed as questionable for the Gauchos' next match versus Long Beach State.
With the win the Gauchos move back to a .500 mark of 5-5-1. Sacramento State falls to a 6-3-1 record with the loss. Santa Barbara is home for their next match against Long Beach State on October 6, at 7:00 pm. This will be the first conference game of the year for the Gauchos.
