Santa Barbara, Calif. -
The third time was a charm as UC Santa Barbara defeated Northern Arizona 2-1 Friday night, its first win in three matches this season.
Both teams entered the match looking for their first wins of the year and in the end it was UCSB which pulled it out to improve its record to 1-1-1. Northern Arizona remains winless as its record falls to 0-5.
The Gauchos jumped on the Lumberjacks early as sophomore Beth Ramos took a shot on goal 1:00 into the match, narrowly missing. UCSB kept the pressure on and at the 12:00 mark, sophomore Erica Perrotta scored the Gauchos first goal of the year with the assist going to Ramos. UCSB settled on its lead for most of the first half that included an outstanding save at the 40:00 mark by junior goalkeeper Mary Gleason. Just before halftime, at 44:45, Northern Arizona tied the score when senior Holly Jones scored her second goal of the year.
In the second half UCSB's defense, led by senior co-Captains Meghann Phillips and April Loveland took over. The Gaucho defense allowed only three shots on goal in the half. UCSB kept the pressure on offensively as well as it took 12 shots on goal. Finally at 80:09 of the match Loveland gave the Gauchos a 2-1 lead with a 25-yard shot from the right side of the field. The Gaucho defense did its part after that and UCSB held on to win 2-1.
With the win, the Gauchos are now 1-1-1 on the season while the Lumberjacks are now 0-5. The Gauchos continue their homestand Sunday, Sepetember 10 against the University of Hawaii at 1:00 p.m.
