SAN DIEGO, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara struggled to a first round 312, but then shot 292 in the final two round, en route to an 896 and a 12th-place finish at the 2007 Callaway Golf Invitational Tuesday.
The Gauchos were in 14th-place after shooting a 312 in the first round of the tourney, but they made strides in the final two rounds to move up two spots. Freshman Brian Hollenbeck shot a one-under par 143 over the final two rounds to lead the comeback. He finished in a tie for 21st-place as UCSB's top player at four-over par 220.
Joe Ryon, who shot a dismal 82 in the first round, picked-up the pace by shooting a one-over par 145 in the final two rounds to finish in a tie for 46th-place. Tony Verna (+13, 229) finished in a tie for 54th-place while Marty Melcher (+14, 230) and Ryan Keefe (+14, 230) completed their three rounds in a tie for 57th-place.
San Diego State and the host school University of San Diego, battled for the team crown. The Aztecs wound-up with a seven-shot victory over the Toreros, 867 to 874.
UC Davis star Louie Bishop won the individual championship with a seven-under par 209.
UCSB returns to the course at the USF/Wisconsin Invitational at the Pauma Valley Country Club in Pauma Valley, Calif., on March 12 and 13.
