Heartbreaking loss for Anteaters in Berkeley

BERKELEY, Calif. --- Adam Haley scored with 1:15 left in the second overtime period to lift No. 1 California past fifth-ranked UC Irvine, 11-10, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley Friday night.

The Golden Bears (21-2, 5-0 MPSF) sent the game into overtime when Mike Hayes netted a goal with two seconds remaining in regulation. Neither team scored in the first three-minute overtime session leading to Haley's game-winning goal in the second extra period.

UCI (9-8, 2-2) jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one quarter as senior Tim Hutten scored two of his team-high three goals in the opening period. The Anteaters led 7-6 at halftime and 8-6 after three quarters.

Cal scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to take a 9-8 lead but Hutten scored with 1:26 left to tie the game at 9-9 and Colin Mello put the Anteaters up 10-9 on a goal with 56 seconds remaining in regulation.

Mello, Cole Bielskis and Brandon Johnson added two goals apiece for the Anteaters. Matt Garcia had seven saves in goal for UCI, which faces Pacific Saturday in Stockton at 12 p.m.

The Bears' Michael Sharf led all scorers with five goals while Haley and Jeff Tyrrell scored two apiece.
