Gulida Named SLC's Newcomer of the Year
April 19, 2007 FRISCO - Texas State University transfer Ali Gulida has been named the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year as the league announced its annual tennis awards ahead of this week's SLC Tennis Championships in San Antonio. Gulida joined the Bobcat program in the fall from North Central Texas College where he was an All-American and ranked No. 9 in singles play at the National Junior College Athletic Association's Division I level. In addition to being selected the Newcomer of the Year, Gulida was also named First-Team All-Southland Conference at No. 6 singles on Thursday. Gulida has posted a 12-5 record this spring and was 9-1 in Southland Conference matches. The junior from Buenos Aires, Argentina, has won her last 10 matches including eight straight in straight sets. Gulida also teamed with Sumarie Muller to go 9-3 overall and 6-2 in SLC doubles matches this season. The Bobcats, 11-6 overall, open play in the Southland Conference Tennis Championship Friday when they take on Lamar. The match is slated for 11:30 a.m. on the campus of Texas-San Antonio. The winner will move on to play SLC regular-season champion Southeastern Louisiana Saturday morning at 11:30.
