Bobcats Stay Alive With 5-1 Win Over No. 1 Seed UTA
May 11, 2007 HUNTSVILLE - Two Texas-Arlington throwing errors on a bunt attempt by Jill Kloesel with two on led to three runs in the second, while Alex Newton's two-run triple to right center brought home two more as the No. 3 seed Bobcats (30-25) knocked off No. 1 seed UTA (35-15) 5-1 in day two action at the 2007 Southland Conference Softball Tournament. Ragan Blake was on point, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out seven in the complete game victory to improve to 24-14 on the season. Texas State threatened the second when Jetta Weinheimer led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Ryan Kos then drew a two-out walk, but a wild pitch on ball four allowed Weinheimer to take third. A stolen base put Kos on second, setting up Kloesel for her squeeze attempt for a hit. Kloesel's bunt was fielded by Mav third baseman Courtney Anderson, but her throw to first sailed over the base and into foul ground in right field, scoring both base runners. Right fielder Brittany Washington tried to get Kloesel at second after retrieving the ball, but overthrew the bag to score Kloesel as the throw ended up in the left corner. UTA got a run back in the top of the fifth when Dee Jay Nelson blasted a solo home run over the scoreboard in left field for her second homer in as many games, but in the bottom frame the `Cats answered with a pair of singles by Karen Taylor and Leah Boatright before Newton found the gap for her triple.
From there Blake did the rest, allowing only a walk to the final eight batters she faced to give Texas State the win. UTA's Heather Fortenberry (13-4) took the loss, giving up two earned runs on five hits and four walks in five innings. The Bobcats now must play another elimination game later today as they take on No. 6 seed Nicholls State at 6:30 p.m. Texas State was swept during the regular season in a series at Nicholls, who yesterday in the tournament lost to UTA before defeating No. 5 seed McNeese State in the first elimination game of the weekend.
