SAN MARCOS - Texas State will wrap up the first half of spring football drills Thursday as the squad holds its first full scrimmage beginning at 4 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium.

This week's scrimmage will be the first time this spring the Bobcats will go through snaps in a game-type setting.

"For a lot of young men, this is going to be an opportunity to catch the eye of the coaches," said Texas State head coach David Bailiff. "And we also have a lot of competition at positions where we are determining who is going to be a starter and who will be on the second team.

"This will be the first time this spring to see them without coaches in the huddle. It is a chance to see how they respond to different situations we will put them in."

With spring break scheduled next week for Texas State University, the scrimmage will be a bookmark for the 15-practice spring season. The team will hold the first of eight practices after the break on March 20. The Maroon and Gold Classic caps the spring series of practices April 1.

"I like having the break," Bailiff said. "It was something we did at TCU. For instance, this year we have three players who have mild hamstring pulls. This will give them time to recover and we will get back some young men we want to take a good look at for the second half of our practices."

Texas State has now gone through six practices over the past week and a half. Bailiff said the retention shown by the returning players has been beneficial.

"The last six days have been a lot of fun," he said. "We have a core group of guys who know our offense and know our defense. They know what is expected out of them at practice. It has allowed us to work on the finer points of our offense and defense."
