Hancock, Ruston Claim SLC Titles

NACOGDOCHES - Texas State freshman Valerie Hancock claimed her first conference title while senior Abby Ruston picked up where she left off during the indoor season as the Bobcats competed during Day Two of the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday. Hancock set a personal best mark when she high jumped 1.80 meters (5-10.75) on her first attempt at that distance. Ruston, who was named the SLC Indoor season's Newcomer of the Year, came just one one-hundredth of a meter from tying an eight-year old conference meet record with a shot put throw of 16.73 meters (54-10.75) to capture her third SLC title. Also on Saturday, Katya Kostetskaya set a Southland Conference record in the 800 meters, clocking a time of 2:09.49 in the event prelims. She broke the 13-year old record of 2:09.62 set by Texas State alum Inez Turner in 1994. Kostetskaya will compete in the 800 meter championship Sunday evening as the meet concludes on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University. Also on Saturday, Camilla Davis qualified for the NCAA Regionals by posting a second-place finish in her first long jump competition of the spring. She had a jump of 6.09 meters (19-11.75) on her fourth attempt. She also qualified for Sunday's finals of the 100 and 200 meters. Erroll Harris qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the men's 400 meters with a time of 47.20. His time was the third best during Saturday's prelims. Several other Texas State athletes qualified for Sunday's running event finals while Casey DeWitt's time of 11:10.75 in the 3000 meter steeplechase was good for third Saturday.
