Texas State Competes at Texas Invitational

AUSTIN - Texas State freshman Valerie Hancock registered an NCAA Regional-qualifying mark to win the high jump competition at the Texas Invitational which was run Saturday at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium. Hancock's 1.75 meter (5-08.75) mark in the high jump equaled the top performance by a Southland Conference athlete in the event this season and was the third-best performance all-time by a Bobcat in the event. Texas State had several other student-athletes reach NCAA Regional-qualifying standards at the event. Senior Abby Ruston topped her previous season-best mark in the shot put with a throw of 16.80 meters (55-01.50). Also qualifying for regionals were Gatis Spunde in the 400 meter hurdles, bettering his previous season best with a time of 51.55 to place second while Katie Hanie had another strong performance in the discus. She placed second in the discus with a throw of 48.13 meters. Robert Melin's 57.61 meter mark in the hammer throw was good for second and beat the previous Southland Conference best this season by almost three meters. Also capturing first-place finished at the Texas Invitational was Camilla Davis (100m), Sonetria Mayfield (triple jump), Erroll Harris (400m) and the Bobcats also won the 4x400 meter relay. Davis clocked a time of 11.84 to beat teammate Iris Darrington who placed second in a time of 11.99. Darrington also placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 24.06 while Davis was third in the event, clocking a time of 24.41. Mayfield won the women's triple jump with a mark of 11.85 meters while Harris clocked a time of 48.33 in winning the men's 400 meters.
The men's 4x400m team clocked a time of 3:13.01 to cross the finish line almost a second ahead of Texas (3:14.69). Other top-three performances by the Bobcats at the Texas Invitational included a second-place finish by Clayton Bynum in the 110m hurdles (14.62). Jonathan Williams had a runner-up finish the long jump (6.95m) and also placed third in the triple jump (14.78m). Dmitri Kabakov placed third in the pole vault with a season-best mark of 4.90 meters (16-00.75). |
