The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team suffered a setback to IPFW in Fort Wayne, IN, by a score of 58-41 at the Gates Sports Center on Thursday (Feb. 1).
The loss drops the Lady Broncs to 9-14 on the season while the Mastodons improved to 10-10.
The Mastodons came out of the gate firing on all cylinders going on a 8-0 run out of the tip, but the Lady Broncs refused to lay down, answering with an 8-0 run of their own to tie the game a eight a piece.
The teams proceeded to trade baskets until a LeKeisha Gray (Muskogee, OK/Butler County C.C.) lay up in the paint gave UTPA its first lead of the game at the 12:26 mark in the first half with the score at 17-16.
IPFW's bench answered the call, scoring 13 points from the pine compared to five for UTPA. The Mastodons headed into the intermission with nursing a 36-31 lead in a first half that included two lead changes a three tie scores.
The second half is where it all fell apart for the Lady Broncs as they scored just 10 points in the final 20 minutes of play.
IPFW came out of the locker room and went on a 19-4 run capped by a Johnna Lewis-Carlisle three-point basket, making the score 55-35 with 4:48 remaining in the contest.
Lewis-Carlisle finished with a team-high 12 points on 4-of-14 shooting, including 2-of-7 from behind the arc and 2-of-2 from the foul line while adding three steals and four assists in 33 minutes of action.
Rachel Jones (Little Rock, AR/Little Rock Central H.S.) accounted for six of the Lady Broncs' ten points. Jones scored eight points in 13 minutes of action on 3-of-3 shooting from the field, including a solid 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.
Tamara Vaughn (Houston, TX/Blinn College) scored a game-high 14 points, but was held scoreless in the second half of play. Vaughn's point total came 5-of-10 shooting from the field, including 4-of-8 from behind the arc.
Senior MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) added a game-high 11 rebounds in the losing effort.
As a team, UTPA shot 15.0 percent from the field in the second half which would eventually lead to its demise. For the game, the Lady Broncs went 16-of-48 from the field for 33.3 percent compared to the Mastodon's 33.9 percent on 20-of-59 shooting. IPFW held an advantage in turnovers by a 19-11 margin while also out-rebounding UTPA 39-36.
The Lady Broncs return to action on Saturday (Feb. 3) when they face Utah Valley State College in Orem, UT, with tip-time set for 6:05 p.m.
