The University of Texas-Pan American men's golf team swept Texas A&M International University in Border Battle I at Los Lagos Golf Club on Sunday (May 6) by a 5-0 count.
With winds gusting more that 20 miles per hour, High Wongchindawest (Bangkok, Thailand/Heritage Academy) kicked-off the action when he squared-off against TAMIU's Geoffrey Davis. Through nine holes of play, the UTPA newcomer held a five-hole advantage before finally outlasting Davis at hole nine, taking a five hole lead with four holes to go as play was stopped.
Shane Pearce (Carrollton, TX/Hebron H.S.) followed suit, and was up by five through the front nine against the Dustdevil's Robert Costillos. On the 13th hole play was stopped as Pearce took a six hole advantage with five left to play
The match-up of Kyle Tudi (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral H.S.) and Dustin Dennis of TAMIU was tightly contest as Tudi held a one hole advantage through the front nine before finally outlasting Dennis. The game was called when Tudi took a three hole lead with two to play.
Armen Kirakossian (Portland, OR/Wilson H.S.) matched-up with the Dustdevils Albert Galvan and was up three holes after the first nine, but on the par three 164-yard 14th hole the UTPA newcomer hit a perfect lob from 30 yards out from the rough onto the green with his lob wedge to take a six hole advantage with four to play to clinch the win for the Broncs.
Senior Colin Norris (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Cochrane H.S.) was the final UTPA golfer to tee-off in the group was even with Andres Mamayi through the front nine. It wasn't until the 15th hole that Norris was able to put his opponent away as he took a four-hole lead with three to play, ending the match-up and play for the day.
"I thought we could've done better, but we're back in tournament mode and that should serve us well when we head to Florida for the Minority Championships," said head men's golf coach Andrew Tredway.
The Broncs are back in action on Friday (May 11) when they head to Port St. Lucie, FL, to defend their crown at the National Minority Championships.
