Q&A With Volleyball's Lindsey Norman
Sept. 30, 2004 NEW ORLEANS, La. - A native of Glendale, Ariz., senior outside hitter Lindsey Norman has been a mainstay for the Green Wave volleyball team since her arrival prior to the 2001 season. Her first two seasons at Tulane, she served primarily as a defensive specialist, tallying 333 total digs as a freshman and sophomore. As a junior, however, she worked her way into the starting line-up on the outside and has been an offensive force ever since. After posting 258 kills in 2003, she picked up where she left off as a senior and is averaging 2.67 kills, 3.26 digs and 3.13 points per game. Below, Norman shares her thoughts on her career at Tulane, as well as several other topics. What is Your Major? Marketing. I would like to go into business one day, and it seemed like a good practical major. It will give me the tools that I can use later in my life.
What Is Your Favorite Book? One Few Over The Cuckoo's Nest. It's one of the classics. What Is Your Favorite On-Campus Activity? Gathering at Bruff Commons. It's a good place to hang out and cool off for a bit. Why Did You Choose Tulane? It's a great academic school in a great city. There's always something going on, it's never boring, and I really like the volleyball program. As you look back on your career, has it been what you envisioned it to be? There have been some ups and downs, but overall it's been a very fulfilling experience. If we can do well this season and advance to the NCAA's, I feel that my career will be complete. If You Could Play Another Sport At Tulane, What Would It Be? Tennis. I love to play tennis. I've never really played it competitively, but it seems to be a lot like volleyball. Who Are The People Who Have Influenced Your Athletic Career Most? I'd have to say my brother, Bobby. Growing up, my brother and I would always play. Sometimes we made up sports just to compete. He helped instill a competitive drive in me. Who Is Your Favorite Actor? Johnny Depp. He's a really good actor and it seems like he can play nearly any role. In his movies, he goes from being a crazy pirate in Pirates of the Caribbean to that weird dude in Edward Scissor Hands. Do You Have A Favorite Food or Meal? Tamales. Some friends of my family makes them and they are unbelievable. What Is Your Dream Vacation Destination? Italy. I've read a lot about it in the past and it seems like a place that I would really enjoy. What's Been Your Favorite Moment As A Tulane Volleyball Player? It happened last year in Tampa. We were down two games to none against South Florida and came back to win. That's such a hard thing to do, especially on the road. What Are Three Words You Would Use To Describe Mardi Gras? Crazy, crowded and filthy. What Is Your Favorite TV Show? Saved By The Bell. Zac Morris is my favorite, especially his cell phone. What Is Your Favorite Sport To Watch On TV? I love watching tennis. Wimbledon, the Australian Open, it doesn't matter. It's just a great sport to watch in person or on TV. Do You Have A Favorite Movie? Ferris Buehler's Day Off. That was a great group of characters - Ferris, Cameron Frye, Ed Rooney and Sloan Peterson. You can't beat that. What Is Your Favorite Sports Movie? Major League. That movie has some of the all-time great lines in it. "Just a bit outside." What Kind Of Music Do You Listen To? All kinds really, but mostly is early 90s alternative rock like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. If You Could Go To Any Concert Ever Performed, Who Would You See? Nirvana. I would like to have seen one back in the day. Do You Have A Pregame Routine To Get Focused Or Pumped? My brother gave me these Chinese Zen balls to help me relaxed, and they're painted like volleyballs. I bring them on the road with me when we travel, and I always play with them before a match. If Tulane Could Beat One School In Volleyball, Who Would It Be? I'd love to beat Arizona State. I grew up watching them, and my parents both went to Arizona - and that's their rival. It would be pretty cool. How Has Being A Student-Athlete At Tulane Helped or Changed You? It gives me structure in my day. I made a lot of great friends. And between schoolwork and playing volleyball, I've really taught me a lot about how to manage my time. |
