Green Wave Student-Athletes Post Stellar Fall Semester
March 3, 2005 NEW ORLEANS - Led by the Green Wave women's cross country team, which combined for a semester grade point average of 3.41, Tulane student-athletes posted an overall grade point average of 3.0 for the Fall 2004 semester. Nine of the Wave's 16 teams earned a combined semester grade point average of 3.0 or above, including the top-ranked Tulane baseball team with a semester GPA of 3.00, while 12 teams currently hold a cumulative GPA over 2.9. The Green Wave football and men's basketball teams both checked in with a 2.50 cumulative grade point average as the football squad led the way among all Tulane teams with 24 individuals on the 3.0 Club list. In all, Tulane saw 49.5 percent (155) of all student-athletes achieve a GPA of 3.0 or above for the fall, including 20.4 percent (66) who qualified for the Dean's List. The women's cross country team placed 13 student-athletes on the 3.0 list and were one of six teams with double-digit 3.0 Club qualifiers. The soccer team had 22 student-athletes achieve a 3.0 GPA for the Fall 2004 semester, followed by baseball with 21 and women's swimming and diving, who saw 16 student-athletes qualify. Women's track and field added 10 more names to the list.
Topping the GPA rankings were nine Green Wave student-athletes, including three members of the Tulane football team, who earned perfect 4.0 grade point averages for the semester. Twin offensive linemen Joe and Matt Traina (Coral Gables, Fla.) and defensive linemen Michael Roberts (Houston, Texas) were joined on the 4.0 list by swimmers Tiffany Brown (San Diego, Calif.) and Amanda Williams (Vestavia Hills, Ala.), Wes Hitchcock (Parkland, Fla.) and Jeff Osborn (Glendale, Calif.) of the Green Wave men's golf team, women's tennis player Jenny Kuehn (Leipzig, Germany) and soccer's Rachel Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.). Soccer ranked second behind women's cross country on the team semester GPA rankings with a 3.303 mark, followed closely by women's golf and women's swimming and diving at 3.295. The top Tulane men's team was the men's cross country squad with a 3.24 semester grade point average with the men's track and field and men's golf teams close behind at 3.18. "We're very pleased that Tulane student-athletes continue to perform at these remarkable levels in the classroom," said Athletic Director Rick Dickson. "As usual, this is a credit first of all to our students and their hard work; I also think we have a good support system in place that provides student-athletes with the opportunity to succeed. If we keep hitting the 3.0 mark with this kind of consistency, we're going to have to set our sights even higher." The Fall 2004 total marks the fourth time in the last five semesters that Tulane's combined semester grade point average has been at 3.0 or above. The lone exception was the Spring 2003 total which came in at "only" 2.98. See the complete list of Tulane Athletics' Fall 2004 3.0 Club honorees below. TULANE ATHLETICS FALL 2004 3.0 CLUB
