Green Wave Women's Tennis Cruises to 6-1 Victory Over VCU

March 13, 2005

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane women's tennis team won its 10th match of the season behind its second 6-1 decision of the weekend, defeating Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday afternoon at Goldring Tennis Center.

Juniors Jenny Kuehn and Julie Smekodub, ranked No. 50 in the nation, played nearly a perfect match at No. 1 doubles, blanking the No. 15 tandem of Yuferova and Borisova, 8-0, while the senior duo of Nancy Kockott and Maria Ivanov defeated Arribas and Korotkevich, 8-3, at No. 2 as Tulane captured the doubles point.

Kuehn's solid play in doubles carried over to singles as she picked up her first win of the year at No. 1, defeating Marianna Yuferova, 6-3, 3-0, who withdrew with an injury.

"Jenny (Kuehn) and Julie (Smekodub) played about as perfect of a doubles match as you can play," Tulane head coach David Schumacher said. "Jenny also had a good singles win today. She played almost flawless tennis. VCU is a good team that plays much better than their ranking indicates."

Smekodub came out on top in the close match on the third court, 7-5, 7-5, against the Rams' Cristina Arribas while Kockott notched the win at No. 4 over Viktoria Konstantinova, 6-4, 6-2.

Sophomore Dorottya Magas moved her winning streak to eight matches, posting a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 over Vera Petrashevitch. At the six spot, senior Ana Saaibi evened her record at 6-6 with a 7-5, 6-2 win over VCU's Alexa Korotkevich.

No. 19 Tulane (10-5) plays its next seven matches on the road, returning to action on Saturday, March 19 at Rice. The Wave returns to Goldring Tennis Center on April 13, hosting LSU.
