No. 10 Women's Tennis Upended by No. 15 North Carolina

Feb. 3, 2005

MADISON, Wis. - Despite singles wins from Jenny Kuehn and Dorottya Magas, the No. 10 Tulane women's tennis team lost to No. 15 North Carolina, 5-2, in the opening round of the 2005 USTA/ITA Women's Tennis National Indoor Championship.

After earning the doubles point, North Carolina captured two singles matches before Kuehn put Tulane on the board, winning her match at No. 2 singles over Kendall Cline. Kuehn, ranked No. 81 in the latest ITA rankings, cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Cline, the nation's No. 37 player.

Magas, currently ranked No. 106, scored the last point for the Wave, taking her match with Charlie Tansill at No. 6 to three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7, for the win.

The Tar Heels No. 1 doubles team of Aniela Mojzis and Cline, the 14th team in the nation, defeated the sister duo of Maria and Darya Ivanvov, ranked No. 49, 8-3, as North Carolina took an early advantage for the doubles point. The Green Wave responded with a win at No. 3 by Magas and Nancy Kockott, 8-4, over Tansill/Collins, but the Tar Heel tandem of Anundsen Long clinched the point by edging Julie Smekodub and Kuehn, 6-8, at No. 2.

"Jenny Kuehn played a very solid match for us today," Tulane head coach David Schumacher said. "North Carolina has a very good team, we were close and we certainly had our chances. Tomorrow (against Clemson) will be another big challenge for us."

The Green Wave (2-2) meets No. 3 Clemson (1-1), who lost 5-1 to Kentucky, at 9 a.m., in Friday's consolation draw. The 2005 WTNIC continues through the weekend at Wisconsin's A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
