Tulane Receiving Votes in Both Women's Basketball Polls
Feb. 13, 2007 NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane Women's Basketball team (21-4 overall having won nine in a row) is garnering votes in both the Associated Press Top 25 and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll. The Green Wave are in the also receiving votes category for the third straight week in the AP, and register points in the Coaches' poll for the first time. Tulane is receiving 13 points in the AP, which ranks 29th among vote-getters. Last week, the Wave was slotted 33rd with four points. Tulane also received four points in the January 29-February 4 poll, placing 37th. The Green Wave earned five points in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Top 25, good for a tie for 30th. Tulane, a regular in the Top 25 from 1997 to 2001, was last ranked in the Top 25 the week of Jan 7, 2002 (No. 20 AP). Tulane's highest ranking ever was No. 7 in the February 29 and March 7, 2000 AP Poll. The Green Wave occupy first place in Conference USA with a 10-2 record following Saturday's 66-48 over then-conference co-leader UAB. Tulane can clinch a first round bye in the Conference USA tournament with wins this weekend over Marshall and East Carolina. Tulane also has a two-game lead on the rest of the conference for in the race for the regular season Conference USA title. A C-USA regular season championship would be the third for the Green Wave, having won the league in 1997 and 1999. The Wave have won four C-USA tournament titles, in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001. A win at Marshall would run the Wave's win streak to 10, break a tie for the second longest win streak and second longest road win streak in school history (six) as well as tie the second-longest win streak versus conference opponents (10) and set a new school record for consecutive conference road victories (six). Tulane has wrapped up its eighth 20-win season in the last 13 years, all under coach Lisa Stockton. The previous seven resulted in NCAA Tournament appearances as Tulane has earned a trip to the dance in each season the team has won at least 19 games (1995-2003). A school record for wins (currently at 27 in 1999-2000) is still a possibility as Tulane has four regular season games remaining before the Conference USA Tournament.
On Thursday, the Wave meet Marshall in Huntington, WV, in a 6 p.m. CT tip-off, and then visit East Carolina on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT. The Herd and Pirates are tied for fifth entering this week's action with 7-5 Conference USA marks. Complete Polls Below
