Green Wave Defeat Lady Indians 69-64

Dec. 22, 2002

JONESBORO, Ark. - Gwen Slaughter scored 12 points, going 6-of-6 from the field, to lead Tulane past the Arkansas State University women's basketball team 69-64 in a non-conference game on Sunday in the Convocation Center.

Tulane improved its record to 6-2 on the year while ASU, dropping its fourth straight, fell to 3-6 on the season.

Complimenting Slaughter was Teana McKiver, who had 11 points and 11 boards in the victory while Muci Haris, Delacey Joseph and Britt Themann had nine points each.

The Green Wave shot 47-percent from the field and 60-percent from the free throw line while out-rebounding ASU 44-29 and forcing 20 turnovers.

Casie Lowman and Z Humphries paced ASU with 13 points apiece. Jolie McKeirnan was the only other Lady Indian in double-digit scoring with 10 points.

The Tribe was 44-percent shooting on the day, including 43-percent from beyond the three-point arc, but only made 46-percent of its free throws. ASU forced 23 turnovers while nabbing 12 steals.

The Lady Indians jumped out to a 21-11 lead in the early going of the first half behind field goals from McKeirnan, Lowman and Humphries, but Tulane went on a 13-0 run to take the lead on a jump shot from Joseph at the 4:54 mark. However, ASU closed out the half with a 9-2 scoring run, giving the Lady Indians a 34-30 advantage at the break.

After both teams traded a couple of baskets, Tulane went on an 8-1 run to take a 43-42 lead at 11:57 in the second half. ASU countered with a jumper from LaToya Graves, but Lakethia Hampton hit a jump shot on the Green Wave's next trip down the court. The Lady Indians tied the game once more, but Tulane pulled away the final two minutes, making six free throws and two field goals over that stretch to end the game.

Arkansas State will back in action when it takes on Santa Clara on December 28 in Santa Clara, California.
