McKiver Perfect From The Field To Lead Tulane To First-Round Win
Nov. 23, 2001
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - -
Tulane scored the first 21 points of the first half and the last 21 points of the first half to cruise to a 109-39 win over the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez in the first round of the San Juan Shootout on Friday. Tulane improved to 2-0 to start the season, while UPR-Mayaguez dropped to 0-5. The 70-point margin of victory was the largest in school history for the Green Wave, topping the previous best of 64 set in a 96-32 triumph over UNC Asheville on November 26, 1999. Tulane's 109 points were also the third most scored in a single game, trailing only the school record of 117, set against Central Florida in 1987, and a 110-point effort turned in against Boston University last season. Preseason All-Conference USA selection Teana McKiver led all scorers with 23 points, finishing the night a perfect 9-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. She also added seven rebounds, one assist, one blocked shot and one steal without committing a turnover in just 19 minutes of action. Gwen Slaughter added her second double-double in as many games, scoring 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while pulling down 11 rebounds. She also chipped in two assists, three blocked shots and five steals in 21 minutes. Tulane raced out to a 21-0 lead in the first 5:30 before UPR-Mayaguez scored its first point with a free throw at the 14:17 mark. The Janes hit their first field goal of the game with 12:43 left in the first half, cutting Tulane's lead to 22-4. However, Lakethia Hampton hit a pair of free throws to restore the 20-point suhion and the Janes would get no closer the rest of the way. UPR-Mayaguez pulled to within 39-14 with 6:10 left, but the Green Wave ended the opening stanza with another 21-0 burst to take a 60-14 lead into the locker room. Delacey Joseph scored a career-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting while adding three assists and three steals. Britt Themann gave the Green Wave a fourth player in double figures, adding 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor. Hampton added a career-best eight points and 10 rebounds, while Sarah Goree added six assists. Twelve of Tulane's 13 players saw at least 12 minutes of action and each of those 12 scored at least two points. All 13 Green Wave players pulled down at least one rebound. Tulane connected on 55.2 percent of its shots (37-of-67) from the floor and 45.5 percent of its three-pointers (5-of-11). The Green Wave were also an impressive 81.1 percent from the free throw line (30-of-37). UPR-Mayaguez hit just 25.6 percent of its shots (11-of-43) from the floor and were just 3-of-17 from behind the three-point arc (17.6 percent). The Green Wave held a 52-26 edge in rebounding and picked up 17 steals on 32 Jane turnovers. The Green Wave return to action on Saturday, taking on Hampton in the second round of the San Juan Shootout. The Pirates held on to post a 67-63 win over Kansas after having led by as many as 20 midway through the second half. Saturday's game is scheduled to tip-off at 6:30 p.m. Puerto Rico time, which is 4:30 p.m. CST time. |
