Tulane Football Headed to Hawaii
Dec. 6, 2002 NEW ORLEANS - After waiting nearly two weeks, the Tulane Green Wave learned Friday that its reward for a 7-5 season will be a trip to Honolulu, Hawai'i to play in the ConAgra Foods Hawai'i Bowl on December 25th versus the University of Hawai'i. The game will kickoff at 7 p.m. Central time (3 p.m. HST) and will be televised on ESPN. Tulane's spot in the Hawai'i bowl game was assured when Cincinnati defeated East Carolina, 42-26, in the final Conference USA game of the season to become bowl-eligible and clinch a berth in the New Orleans Bowl. "We're excited to be playing in the ConAgra Foods Hawaii Bowl," said Green Wave Head Coach Chris Scelfo, who becomes the first mentor in Tulane history to coach the Wave in two bowl games. "I know our players and coaches understand how important this game is and what a tremendous challenge it will be for our football team. We're looking forward to seeing Hawaii, but we also realize the importance of being focused and prepared to play a football game." Tulane clinched a bowl berth, its first since the 1998 season, with a 31-10 victory over Southern Miss on Nov. 23rd that left the Green Wave with a 7-5 record during the regular season. The Green Wave will play in the 10th bowl game in the history of the program. "Playing in the ConAgra Foods Bowl in Hawaii will be a neat, and for many, a once-in-a-lifetime trip, for our student-athletes," said Rick Dickson, Tulane Director of Athletics. "They will see a part of the world most of them have never seen with a different culture and a different way of life. Plus, we will have the opportunity to play in front of our fans across the country before a national television audience on Christmas Day." Tickets for the Hawai'i bowl are $40 and are available through the Green Wave Athletics Ticket Office in the James W. Wilson Center, or by calling 504-861-WAVE. In addition, DMI Travel of New Orleans, along with Tulane, has put together travel packages to Honolulu. More information on those packages is available by calling DMI Travel at 504-525-0050 or 1-800-479-8222 or by contacting the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office at 504-861-WAVE. Information on all aspects of Tulane's trip, as well as extensive coverage of the trip once the Green Wave arrives in Honolulu, can be found on the special Bowl Central page at www.TulaneGreenWave.com beginning Saturday. Tulane students will also have a chance to purchase bowl tickets at the special rate of $10 while Green Wave faculty and staff will receive a $10 discount on their first two tickets purchased. -- Roll Wave -- |
