Inclement Weather Cuts Short Football Practice To Start Week 3
April 10, 2007 NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane University football team took the field for week three of spring practice, but had to cut it short as lightening in the uptown New Orleans area caused the team to head for the locker room halfway through Tuesday morning at the Westfeldt Practice Facility. A steady rain fell throughout practice, but a little over an hour into the session, the team went indoors for meetings with the expectation of returning as soon as the lightening had passed. The Green Wave retook the field at approximately 9:30 a.m., but before practice continued, a nearby lightening strike forced the team back inside and the coaching staff called it a day. "You have a four-day weekend, you come back and want to get some work done and something like this happens," new head football coach Bob Toledo said. "We missed a good half of our practice and most of our team work, which is disappointing. But when we were out there, we got a few things done and that's the positive of it." Prior to the break in the action, the team went through its daily routine of stretching and positional drills and had just completed a one-on-one blocking drill when inclement weather forced a halt in the action. While on the field, the quarterbacks and wide receivers worked on a variety of timing routes, and signal callers Scott Elliott, Kevin Moore and Anthony Scelfo all took turns in making an impression with some nice downfield passes. The team was slated to work on short-yardage situations and mid-range passing situations prior to the weather becoming an issue. Teaching, however, continued to be the main point of the day and the Toledo added that he was impressed with the amount of retention by the players despite the long layoff.
Other news for Green Wave camp on Tuesday was another position change as redshirt-freshman Shannon Davis made the move from cornerback to wide receiver. Davis sat out last year, but was a first-team all-city selection as a senior at Benjamin Mays High in Atlanta, Ga. For his prep career, Davis picked off 21 passes, posted 99 tackles and recovered three fumbles while also seeing time as a wideout and return specialist. "(Davis) feels that his opportunities are better there then at corner," Toledo said of the move. "We looked at him and he's got a lot of speed - there's no question about that. Now, he's got to learn to become a receiver. I haven't seen enough of him yet, but this is something that he wanted to do and we're going to let him do it." The Green Wave continues spring practice on Wednesday, April 11, at 8:30 a.m. at the Westfeldt Facility. Season tickets for the 2007 Tulane football season are now on sale through the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office.
