March 30, 2002

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Tulane University senior Solomon Kandie (Nairobi, Kenya) was the top collegiate finisher in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Stanford Relays with a time of 8:42.92, which exceeds the automatic qualifying standards for the NCAA Championships.

Kandie has qualified for the NCAA Championships in the steeplechase in each of the last two years as well, finishing third in 2000.

In addition, freshman Erik Emilsson (Bjarred, Sweden) finished fourth in the steeplechase with a Provisional-qualifying time of 8:51.28.

Green Wave senior Clement Abai (Port Moresby, New Guinea) was slated to participate in the 800 and freshman Phillip Aagaard (Linkoping, Sweden) was to run the 1,500. However, results will not be available until later this evening.

Tulane also had student-athletes in action at the Florida Relays this weekend. Freshman Helmi Leppanen (Kerava, Finland) had the top performance in Gainesville, tossing the javelin 154-06, an NCAA Provisional-qualifying distance and the fifth-best mark in school history.

The Wave will be in action next Saturday, hosting the Tulane Invitational at the newly-renovated Westfeldt Practice & Competition Facility on the Tulane campus.
