No. 15 Texas Tech Defeats Army 4-0 in First Round of NCAA Championship
May 14, 2005
LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 15 Texas Tech men's tennis team defeated Army, 4-0, in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship on Sat., May 14, at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock. It was the first-ever victory in the NCAA Championship for the Red Raiders in their five appearances. Tech improved to 24-4, while Army finishes the year 21-5. "Army showed me that they are definitely a capable team," said head coach Tim Siegel. "They're very aggressive; they came in a lot and put some pressure on us. This was really a perfect first round test for us. I thought some of our players were a little bit rusty; they weren't as sharp mentally as they could have been. The wind got to them a little bit, but for the most part I was very pleased." In doubles action, Radek Nijaki and Bojan Szumanski defeated Carl Fisher and John Houghton, 8-5, at the No. 1 spot and Esat Tanik and Adrian Prpic beat Sebastian Salas and Kyle Roybal, 8-3, at No. 2 to claim the doubles point for the Red Raiders. First to finish for the Red Raiders in singles play was Dimitrio Martinez who defeated Roybal, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 6 slot. Tech's No. 3 singles player Jakob Paulsen defeated Michael Good, 6-1, 6-4. Clinching the match for the Red Raiders was Michael Innerebner at No. 5, beating Sebastian Salas, 7-5, 6-4.
"We had three or four guys who could have closed it out, and there were a couple of players who had opportunities to finish early," Siegel stated. I was pleased with our doubles play, because that is always a concern for us. I was especially pleased with Dimitrio Martinez and Jakob Paulsen. They took care of business, were very business-like and played well. It was definitely a good first match for us." Tech will face the winner of the TCU-Wake Forest match in the second round on Sun., May 15, at 1 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center. If inclement weather occurs, the match will be moved indoors to the Lubbock Country Club.
