Tech Men's Tennis Team Suffered Defeat to No. 21 Texas, 6-1

Austin, TX - The Texas Tech men's tennis team suffered defeat to No. 21 Texas today, 6-1. The Red Raiders are now 13-6 for the season and 3-3 in Big 12 play. Next week, the Red Raiders will defend their home courts one last time this season. They will play Oklahoma State for their last conference game April 12 and then Abilene Christian April 15.
At the No. 1 spot for singles, senior Alfonso Perez grasped the only win as he downed Jimmy Haney, 6-4, 7-5. Playing the No. 2 slot, sophomore Esat Tanik fell to Jose Zarhi, 7-6, 7-5. Sophomore Michael Innerebner stepped up to the No. 3 position but suffered defeat to Antonio Ruiz, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3. At the No. 4 spot was senior John Walker, he was unable to overcome Pete Stoer as he fell, 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Jonathan John played at the No. 5 singles, but lost to Roger Gubser, 6-1, 6-4. Freshman Casper Steenkamp came in at the No. 6 slot but fell to Will Clinton, 7-5, 6-4.
"I am so proud of this team and their efforts this weekend,' said head coach Tim Siegel. " Without Diederik, our attitude was fantastic. We had two players that were sick all weekend, but their efforts were great. I was real proud of how they came in a fought against these top ranked teams. We were in every match down to the last point and we are looking forward to playing Oklahoma State next weekend." In doubles action, at the No. 1 spot was the duo of Perez and Tanik. They were not able to overcome Simon and Zarhi as they fell, 8-5. Senior Devin Wakeford and Innerebner teamed up at the No. 2 spot but were overcome by Stoer and Haney, 8-4. Playing as the No. 3 duo was Walker and John, but they fell to Hoskins and Ruiz, 8-6. The Red Raiders will play at home for their last two season matches. They will host their last conference match against Oklahoma State on April 12 and then will host Abilene Christian on April 15.
