Tech Men's Tennis Team Falls To UC Santa Barbara, 6-1

SAN DIEGO, CA - The Texas Tech men's tennis team falls to UCSB today, 4-3. The Red Raiders are now 13-3 for the season and 3-1 in Big 12 play. Tech prepares to meet the University of San Diego tomorrow at 2:30 CT.
Senior John Walker was triumphant over Nicholas Brotman at the No. 5 position, 6-3, 6-4. Playing No. 1 singles, senior Alfonso Perez fell to Carlos Palencia, 6-4, 7-5. At the No. 2 slot, sophomore Esat Tanik suffered defeat to Mirco Schwindt, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Senior Devin Wakeford fell to Alex Anselme at the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. At No. 4 singles, sophomore Michael Innerebner lost to Mike Placek, 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Jonathan John fell to Michael Frick at the No. 6 slot, 6-3, 6-2.
"I was disappointed with Diederik's performance in doubles, so I took him out," said head coach Tim Siegel. "It is a tough thing to do when you take your No. 1 player out, but if you don't play hard, you don't play for me. I was proud of our other guys and their efforts. Santa Barbara was a tough team." For No. 3 doubles, Innerebner and Walker defeated Frick and Brotman, 8-3. Playing the No. 1 duo, de Groot and Wakeford fell to Palencia and Schwindt, 8-2. At No. 2 doubles, Perez and Tanik suffered defeat to Anselme and Placak, 9-8. The Red Raiders will continue their road trip to Texas A&M on April 4 and Texas on April 5. Their next two matches will be at home. Tech will play Oklahoma State on April 12 and Abilene Christian on April 15.
