RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Jessica Jaworski and junior Virginia Gonzalez each scored goals and senior goalkeeper Serene McGrath made nine saves to lead Temple (10-9) to a 2-0 victory over Virginia Commonwealth (4-12) in field hockey Saturday afternoon at Cary Street Field. Gonzalez gave the Owls an early advantage when she scored off a feed from freshman Haley Dervinis just 12:15 into the game. McGrath made the lead stick with six first-half saves, and Jaworski added an insurance goal when she knocked in a pass from junior Jessica Grisafi with under nine minutes remaining. Temple controlled play for the majority of the second half, as the Owls outshot VCU 8-4 after intermission and were awarded seven penalty corners. The Rams' best scorin g opportunity came with 11:35 left in the opening period. Freshman Nicole Sullivan (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) drove home a rebound of a shot from senior Masha Sonina (Moscow, Russia/Lafayette (Va.) High) to seemingly tie the game at 1-1, but the goal was waved off. VCU will close out its 2000 regular season at home tomorrow afternoon when the Rams host Villanova at 1 p.m. Temple travels to #1 Old Dominion on Sunday in its regular-season finale.
