COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The 2006 Terrapin Invitational opened Saturday with first-ranked Maryland downing Temple, 2-1. Freshman forward Charise Young accounted for the Owls' lone goal of the afternoon. With the win, the Terps improve their unblemished record to 5-0 while Temple falls to 3-2.
The Owls took a 1-0 advantage following Young's second goal of the season at the 14:53 mark of the first half. The goal, credit an assist to fellow freshman forward Mandi Ruth, would turn out to be Temple's lone shot of the afternoon. The defending national champions would respond at the 32:13 mark following freshman forward Nicole Murraco's third goal of the season. Despite the tie score, the Terps took a 6-0 penalty corner advantage into the intermission.
Maryland would go ahead for good with just over 20 minutes remaining in the second half following junior forward Janneke van Leeuwen's third goal of the season. van Leeuwen redirected a rebound off a penalty corner for the game's eventual decisive goal. The Terps would out-shoot the Owls 23-1 for the contest while registering 12 penalty corners.
Temple sophomore goalkeeper Erin Hanshue tied a career-high posting 12 saves in the losing effort while Maryland junior goalkeeper Kathryn Masson went without a save to record to the win.
The Terrapin Invitational resumes for the Owls Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. against #12 American.
