Temple Names Shawn Campbell Associate Head Women's Basketball Coach

PHILADELPHIA -- Temple University Head Coach Dawn Staley announced May 1 that

Shawn Campbell, regarded as one of the top assistant coaches in the nation,

has been named associate head coach of the Temple women's basketball team.

Campbell, University of Virginia's associate head coach, is Staley's first

coaching staff appointment.

Campbell brings a wealth of experience to the Temple program. He has served

as an assistant coach under Head Coach Debbie Ryan since 1985. In that time,

the Virginia program has experienced tremendous national success, including

NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his 15 seasons. The Cavs advanced to

the NCAA Final Four in 1991, 1992 and 1993, the Final Eight in 1995 and

1996, and the Sweet 16 11 times in the past 14 years. Virginia has been ACC

regular season champion 10 times, including this past season.

"I am very pleased that Coach Campbell is joining our coaching staff,"

Staley said. "As associate head coach at Virginia, Shawn has been involved

in every aspect of building one of the best programs in the country. With

his coaching, administrative and recruiting experience, I am confident that

we are assembling a coaching staff that will enable us to build a first

class program here at Temple."

Campbell, who has worked with both the guards and post players, has overseen

the development of four Kodak All-Americans including Staley (1990, 1991,

and 1992), Tammi Reiss (1991 honorable mention and 1992), Tonya Cardoza

(1991 honorable mention) and Wendy Palmer (1994 honorable mention, 1995, and

1996). Staley was also the 1991 and 1992 consensus National Player of the

Year and ACC Player of the Year.

A graduate of Trenton State College in 1982 with a BA in health and physical

education, Campbell helped lead TSC to a top 10 national ranking and the

school's first ever NCAA Tournament appearance as a senior. He joined the

TSC women's basketball coaching staff as a graduate assistant in 1984 and

the following season became a full-time assistant coach. He earned his

Master's degree in Athletic Administration in 1985 from Trenton State

College.

A New Jersey native, Campbell is married to the former Terri Dadio of

Bethlehem, Pa.
