ANNAPOLIS, MD -- Despite shooting five strokes worse than its first-round score of 285, Winthrop held off a charging Navy team to capture the 2002 Navy Fall Golf Classic at the par 71 U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course. Winthrop turned in a 7-over par 575, while Navy and Towson tied for second place with each team posting a 9-over par 577 score. Meanwhile, William & Mary slipped from second to fourth on the final day, with an 8-stroke swing from the first round to the second, posting a 12-over par 580. Georgetown held its ground in fifth to round out the top five with a 14-over par 582.
The individual title went to Towson's Billy Wingerd who won a playoff with Navy junior Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.). Wingerd followed his first-round 67 with a final-day 70. Meanwhile, Hurley traded his first-day score of 70 for a final-round 67 to force a playoff. The three-round playoff was won by Wingerd who birdied on the third hole. Temple placed ninth out of 15 schools with a two-round 608 (+40). The Owls finished three strokes behind Atlantic 10 Conference rival George Washington and two strokes ahead of crosstown foe Saint Joseph's. Pl.
