MOOSIC, PA (May 19) - After rain postponed the opening round of the 54-hole NCAA East Regional Thursday at Glenmaura National Golf Club, 42 players took to the course Friday morning to complete their rounds. Shortly thereafter, the second round of play began. For the second consecutive day, play was postponed at 8:22 p.m. due to darkness. The leader in the clubhouse is Clemson University, who posted a two-round 581 and holds a 12 stroke lead over the No. 1 ranked Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech (593). The Tarheels of the University North Carolina (594) completed the second round tied for third with the Ospreys of the University of North Florida (594). Carl Petterson (Greensboro, N.C.) of N.C. State fired a second round 69 to bring his two-round total to a four-under-par 138 to pace the field and put the Wolfpack into fifth place. Senior James Driscoll (Brookline, Mass.) of Virginia is just behind Petterson with a one-under-par 141. Clemson senior Jonathan Byrd (Columbia, S.C.) is at even par with 141. Fellow Tiger junior Lucas Glover (Greenville, S.C.) finished the second round tied for fourth place with Georgia senior Michael Morrison (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) at 143. Finishing tied for sixth place and three-over-par at 145 were North Florida senior Matt Borchert (Orlando, Fla.) and South Carolina juniors John Bloomfield (Jamaica) and Kyle Thompson (Columbia, S.C.). Clemson junior John Engler (Augusta, Ga.), Georgia Tech junior Bryce Molder (Conway, Ark.) and North Carolina senior Max Harris (Worthing, England) all finished with four-over-par scores of 146. The following teams did not finish the second round: Virginia Commonwealth, East Tennessee State, Tennessee. The top 11 teams, along with the top two individuals whose team do not advance, will advance to the NCAA championships in Opelika, Alabama on May 31-June 3.
At the completion of the first round East Tennessee State (291) held a one-stroke lead over Clemson who posted an eight-over-par 292. Mississippi State and Virginia finished the round tied for third with a nine-over-par 293. As the first round came to a close four individuals posted tournament-low rounds of 69: James Driscoll (Brookline, Mass.) of Virginia, Michael Morrison (Signal Mountain, Tenn.), Carl Petterson (Greensboro, N.C.) of N.C. State and Matt Borchert (Orlando, Fla.) of North Florida.
