March 19, 2003
FORT WORTH, Texas - The 59th-ranked TCU women's tennis team earned a weather-shortened 5-0 win over the Utes of Utah on Wednesday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The win is the second straight for TCU and moves the Frogs' record to 6-5 overall and 2-1 C-USA. Utah's record goes to 4-5. The Frogs swept the doubles point for the first time since the Feb. 1 match versus Houston. The no. 1 tandem of junior Paty Aburto and senior Rosa Perez blanked Cassie Kasteler and Ellen Svensson, 8-0. Both second and third TCU doubles teams claimed 8-4 victories, sophomore Karla Mancinas and junior Saber Pierce over Maria Svensson and Allison Hansen, and sophomore Ivonne Andrade and senior Brenna Shackelford against Sheri Esrock and Rachel Alder. TCU clinched the match by winning all four completed singles matches. At no. 1, Aburto earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ellen Svensson, while Perez picked up the 6-1, 6-2 victory against Kasteler at "two". Freshman Iris Jaklin, playing no. 4, topped Alder 6-1, 6-1, and freshman Gloriann Lopez defeated Allison Hansen, 6-2, 6-1, at the fifth singles spot. The other two matches were not completed due to a lightning. The squads played an extra doubles match and two extra singles matches during the afternoon. Lopez and Jaklin blanked the Utah duo of Hilary Doyle and Rebekah Welsh, 8-0, in doubles play. In singles action, Shackelford defeated Doyle, 8-6, and junior Emily Waters topped Rebekah Welsh, 8-4.
The Frogs host Marshall on Saturday, March 22 in a noon match at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. Next Wednesday, UT-Arlington comes to Fort Worth for a makeup match beginning at 2:00 p.m.
