TCU Down Two Strokes Heading Into Final Round
LEWISVILLE, Texas -- The 14th-ranked TCU women's golf
team is within striking distance of a Western Athletic Conference title
after shooting a two-over-par 290 in the second round of the WAC
Tournament held at the Golf Club at Castle Hills in Lewisville, Texas. The
Frogs' two-day total now stands at a 15-over-par 591.
TCU, who finished second to Tulsa at both the 1999 and 2000 WAC Tournaments, trails the 12th-ranked Golden Hurricane(589) by just two strokes. San Jose State (594) is also in the hunt. The Frogs have relied on depth, as four of the squad's five players are among the field's Top 10 performers. Freshman Courtney Wood leads the pack heading into Wednesday's final round. Wood currently sits in third place individually with a two-day total of 145. On Tuesday, she fired a two-under-par 70, which rates as the third-best score of the tournament, and is one-over for the championship. Junior Jennifer Patterson continued her steady play with a 74. With a two-round 149, she shares sixth place. Brenda Anderson who entered the day tied for first, slipped in the first nine holes, scoring a 44. However, on the back nine, she bounced back with a sizzling tournament-best score of 33. As a result, she sits in ninth place individually with a 150. Sophomore Shannon Barr also is playing well, as she is tied for 10th place with a 151 after shooting a 73. Freshman Brooke Tull, who also fired a 73, is the Frogs' final participant. She is tied for 21st overall with a 158. "We really picked it up on the back nine today," head coach Angie Ravaioli-Larkin said. "The girls really showed a lot of character and heart after the turn. It seems like it always comes down to us and Tulsa. Our goal was to come in and win the WAC, and because of the way we've played thus far, we'll have an opportunity to do that tomorrow." TCU's first tee time on Wednesday for the final round of play at Castle Hills is scheduled for 8:40 a.m. TCU is in a group with Tulsa and San Jose State. The Lady Frogs are seeking the school's fifth WAC sports title during the 2000-01 year. |
