TCU women's golf to close its regular season at BYU Dixie Classic
April 2, 2007 ST. GEORGE, Utah -- The No. 26 TCU women's golf team begins play Tuesday at the BYU Dixie Classic in St. George, Utah. This will be the final regular-season tournament for the Horned Frogs. The par 72, 6,151-yard Entrada at Snow Canyon course will also be the site for the 2007 Mountain West Conference Championship (April 19-21). The 16-team BYU Dixie Classic includes No. 8 Arizona, No. 17 BYU, No. 19 Denver, No. 32 UC Irvine, No. 44 Idaho and No. 46 Washington State. Other MWC teams in the event are Colorado State and San Diego State. There will be a 9 a.m. (CDT) shotgun start each day. The tournament format calls for 36 holes Tuesday with 18 on Wednesday. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com. At last year's MWC Championship at Entrada at Snow Canyon, TCU placed fourth. Catherine Matranga was the top Frog, tying for 10th individually with an 11-over-par 227. Matranga is third in the MWC and 31st nationally in stroke average with a 73.7 mark. She is third in the country with 72 birdies. A senior from Fort Worth, Matranga is one of three Frogs in the top eight in stroke average in the MWC. Freshman Valentine Derrey is seventh (74.7), while senior Camille Blackerby (74.8) is eighth. Derrey, who ranks 19th in par 3 scoring at 3.1, carded a 67 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic (Feb. 23) to tie for the 11th-best round in the nation this season. Matranga, Derrey and Blackerby will represent TCU in the BYU Dixie Classic along with senior Elin Emanuelsson and junior Carrie Morris. It will be the third straight tournament that TCU has utilized this lineup. The Frogs are seventh nationally with 247 birdies while placing 16th in first-round scoring with a 76.2 mark. TCU is returning to action for the first time since placing second at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational (March 16-18). The Frogs have posted runner-up finishes in their last two tournaments and three overall during the 2006-07 campaign. TCU has placed in the top six in eight of its nine events.
