Lady Frogs handle CSU at the DMC

FORT WORTH--TCU cruised to its fifth win in the last six games Saturday with a 70-52 victory over Colorado State at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Helena Sverrisdottir scored a career-high 20 points to lead the Lady Frogs over the Rams.
TCU improved to a season-high two games over .500 at 10-8 (3-1 MWC), while CSU fell to 2-14 on the season (0-3 MWC).
Sverrisdottir connected on 8-of-15 field-goal attempts during the afternoon, including a career-high three from behind the 3-point line. She also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and added three assists in 26 minutes of action. Saturday marked the first time that the freshman from Iceland had led the Lady Frogs in scoring.
Lorie Butler-Rayford had another solid afternoon with 14 points and six rebounds, while Danielle Nunn scored nine points after going 3-for-3 from the field. Adrianne Ross led the team in helpers for the second straight game with five assists, and Micah Garoutte pulled in a career-best six boards in only her second start of the season.
Kandy Beemer and Bonnie Barbee each scored nine points to pace Colorado State, and Amaka Uzomah pulled in a game-high 10 boards.
CSU kept up with the Frogs in the game's first few minutes, but a 20-3 run during a six-minute stretch of the first half placed TCU in clear control of the contest. Despite being out-rebounded by a 22-17 margin in the opening period, TCU forced 14 Ram miscues while establishing a 13-5 advantage in points off turnovers.
TCU staked itself to a seven point lead, 21-14, on the strength of five early 3-pointers. Sverrisdottir sank two of the shots, while Butler-Rayford, Helen Roden and Emily Carter each added single strikes from long range. Nunn finished off a stretch of five consecutive 3-point plays for the Frogs at the 8:35 mark with a free throw after being hacked on a successful runner in the lane. The play gave TCU its first double-digit lead at 24-14.
Butler-Rayford pushed the advantage to 13 points with a heads-up play in which she bounced an in-bounds pass off a CSU player's back, collected the loose ball and cashed in a layup with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half.
The lead crossed 20 points after a 9-0 run pushed the score to 38-17 at the 3:47 mark. CSU scored the final three points of the half to make the margin 38-20 at intermission.
The Rams cut into the deficit with five quick points to lead off the second half, but TCU regrouped while coasting to victory. The Frogs recorded an 11-1 run midway through the half to put the game away. Sverrisdottir scored seven straight points during one stretch of the half to help propel TCU.
The Frogs finished the game with only 14 turnovers compared to Colorado State's 25, as the squad extended its streak of finishing ahead or even in the category to 11 straight games.
TCU will take a week off from competition until its next matchup, a 2 p.m. tip-off against Utah next Saturday, Jan. 26 at the DMC.
