April 6, 2004

FORT WORTH, Texas

Senior Hector Almada from 12th-ranked TCU (14-4) was named Conference USA Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. The Hermosillo, Mexico, native is the fifth Horned Frog to grab the honor this year. TCU has more weekly accolades than any other C-USA school. Tulane and Louisville are each tied with four apiece. Alex Menichini, Rafael Abreu, Jacopo Tezza and Jacob Martin are the other Frogs that have been honored.

Almada posted two wins in singles play for then-No. 14 TCU last week. In the Frogs' 6-1 defeat at No. 6-rated Duke, he was the only netter to earn a victory, downing Peter Rodrigues at the No. 3 spot in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Almada clinched TCU's 4-2 upset over No. 12 Virginia by defeating Rylan Rizza at three singles, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. In doubles, he and Jacopo Tezza were 8-1 winners at No. 2 versus Darrin Cohen and Doug Stewart. The win helped TCU clinch the doubles point and ultimately the match to end its three-match losing streak.

The Purple and White concludes the 2004 season at SMU April 11. First serve is slated for noon CDT.
