Men's tennis advances to semifinals

SAN DIEGO - The 33rd-ranked TCU men's tennis team defeated Air Force 5-0 in the opening round of the 2006 Mountain West Conference Championships on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Frogs improved to 15-9 overall. The squad returns to action on Friday at noon (CDT) when it takes on the winner of the third-seeded BYU and sixth-seeded New Mexico. The Frogs used wins in two of the three doubles matches to claim a 1-0 advantage in the contest. Senior Jacopo Tezza and freshman Kriegler Brink paired at court No. 2 to take an 8-1 victory over Robby Alexander and Greg Ferry. Junior Radu Barbu and sophomore Cosmin Cotet took an 8-1 decision over Keith Croncian and Ryan White at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for the Frogs. Cotet and Barbu posted singles victories at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively. Cotet downed Air Force's Alexander 6-0, 6-2 for his sixth conference win of the season. Barbu's 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Ferry was his fifth in MWC play. Tezza recorded a 6-0, 6-3 win versus Croncian at No. 4 to move to 6-1 in conference matches. The Verona, Italy, product grabbed MWC Player of the Week honors on March 1 after posting a 1-0 mark in singles play and a 1-1 record in doubles competition as he helped the Horned Frogs to a pair of victories. In a win over then No. 70 Denver, Tezza teamed with Brink for a doubles victory over the Pioneers (8-8 [9-7]). In a win over then No. 13 LSU, Tezza defeated the Tigers' Paul White (6-2, 6-4). Brink claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 over White.
