Men's Tennis Upset by South Florida at C-USA Championship, 4-1
April 20, 2002
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- For the second consecutive day at the Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship, No. 1-seeded TCU faced an opponent it had never played before in its semifinal match with third-seeded and 32nd-ranked South Florida, but the unfamiliarity did not seem to bother the Bulls (16-4) as they upset the No. 26 Horned Frogs (11-10) 4-1 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on the campus of Louisville. The Frogs will now play the loser from Tulane/Louisville tomorrow at 9:00 a.m., while USF will take on the winner of that match in the finals at noon. The Frogs dug themselves in a hole early on as they lost the doubles point for the 14th time this season. At the top spot, Uli Kiendl and Paco Antelo cruised to an 8-1 victory over TCU freshman Jacob Martin and sophomore Alex Menichini, while Jorge Escallon and Nadim Naser picked up an 8-5 win at three over junior Toni Gordon and freshman Chris Brandi. TCU tied the match at 1-1 when freshman Willy Gali defeated Escallon 6-0, 6-4 at the six slot, but South Florida countered with three straight wins at three, four and five singles. The match was clinched at five with Naser's 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 triumph over freshman Daniel Scholten. Singles
