No. 71 TCU falls to No. 19 Duke, 5-0
March 14, 2007 FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 71 TCU men's tennis team (1-8) was defeated by No. 19 Duke (7-5), 5-0, on Wednesday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The day was highlighted by the return of senior Radu Barbu.
"We played very tough today against a really good opponent," said TCU head coach Dave Borelli. "Radu being back in the lineup is really going to help us down the road. We're just continuing to improve right now, and we'll be ready once conference play starts."
Barbu's presence could be felt immediately as the Pitesti, Romania, native teamed up with fellow senior Andrew Ulrich to defeat Duke's Alex Stone and Dylan Arnould, 8-5. It was only the second win recorded at the No. 2 slot this season. With the doubles matches knotted at one each, the No. 11 pair of Joey Atas and David Goulet of Duke clinched the point as they edged Kriegler Brink and Cosmin Cotet, 9-8(4).
The Blue Devils went up 3-0 in the match with straight set wins over Christopher Biro and Barbu at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively. Duke clinched the match when No. 98 Dylan Arnould defeated Ulrich, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 5 slot.
The match ended as Brink and Cotet were both in hard fought matches with their Blue Devil opponents.
The Frogs will look to snap their eight-game skid on Saturday, as they will host Abilene Christian at 12 p.m. and Wichita State at 6 p.m.
